Rapper Flo Rida's biggest musical hit is his song "Low." But he is probably feeling a high now that a Florida DUI case is behind him. Back in June of 2008, the star rapper whose real name is Tramar Dillard was pulled over for suspicion of drunk driving in Florida. It took more than three years, but it now sounds as though Dillard can move on with his life.
According to reports, the rapper and his defense team agreed to a plea deal with the prosecution in this celebrity case. Whereas the legal system often likes to make harsh examples out of celebrities facing criminal charges, Dillard gets to walk away from the DUI charge without serving any jail time.
Reports of the star's arrest indicate that Miami authorities pulled him over after they noticed his car driving erratically. After sobriety tests were administered, officials had enough to arrest Dillard and charge him with DUI.
A first DUI conviction wherein the defendant's blood alcohol concentration measured in at 0.15 or higher has some serious potential consequences. The conviction could mean nine months in prison, a suspended driver's license for a year, 50 hours of community service, probation for a year and more.
In Dillard's case, the court agreed to give him a chance at Florida's "Back on Track" program. It's meant for first-time DUI offenders and requires that Dillard puts in community service, attends DUI classes and pays fines and court fees. If he successfully meets the terms of the program, then the DUI would be reduced to a reckless driving conviction on his criminal record.
Avoiding prison time and a DUI conviction can mean a lot to a person's freedom and future. The protection of an aggressive criminal defense attorney is crucial in increasing one's chances of avoiding serious legal penalties.
