Major League Baseball's Miguel Cabrera might be having a good season with the Tigers, but the former Florida player has another stress on his plate besides trying to win the World Series. Back in February, Cabrera was arrested in Florida for suspicion of drunk driving and is yet to go through trial in the DUI case.
Recent news reports indicate that the judge presiding over the Florida DUI case is running out of patience regarding the athlete's trial. There have reportedly been various delays in Cabrera's trial, perhaps due to the baseball season, and now parties have agreed that the jury selection will at least begin late next month.
This legal complication all started for Cabrera earlier this year, when St. Lucie County police found him in his smoking car, on the side of the road. Our source does not say whether Cabrera went through sobriety tests, but in the end, he was charged with DUI. He allegedly had an open container of alcohol in his vehicle and resisted the officer, resulting in two extra criminal charges.
Many people admit to driving while under the influence, and many people do get arrested for DUI. Because such cases are not uncommon, it can be easy to forget that drunk driving can lead to a serious, important legal process. Not all DUI cases might wind up on the front page, but such a conviction can have serious impact on a person's life.
Just imagine, for example, that Cabrera's mere charge ended in conviction during this baseball season. The chance at getting close to every baseball lover's dream would have been lost for him. We will post an update when the DUI case involving the MLB athlete continues.
